The Axis of Medieval Rant: Bring On The Show Trials, Witches and Waterboarding

You've all heard of The Axis Of Evil, of course, but what about The Axis of Medieval? Because, man, has it ever been a great week for them! In fact, it's been an amazing week for all admirers of the Dark Ages and all fans of Medieval systems, techniques and mindsets. First there was the report out of Saudi Arabia the other day about the Saudi Arabian "witch" being sentenced to death for, uh, "casting spells" on some guy, then there was this buffoon in the White House threatening to veto a Senate bill outlawing torture, and, finally, there was the start of the show trials for some of the most prominent tortured inmates at the Guantanamo Bay gulag. Truly a great week for Medieval lovers everywhere.

Touching The Untouchables #7: The Pope

Did you hear the latest one by that Pope guy? You must have heard how, earlier this week, he decided to once again demonstrate his prowess at pomposity with his latest message to the world. And as far as pathetically pompous pontifications go, this one was a definite keeper.

The Nation Built On "Zed" Rant

It is a feeble country indeed that attaches itself so passionately to a zed. What the hell am I talking about? Well, last summer my friend Ken hooked me up with an Alphabet website that his daughter Mhari was totally into. And ever since then we've been checking out a few A, B and Cs here at our place just about every single day. Kaishan loves it and he especially loves to sing "The ABC Song", almost as much as he loves singing "The Birthday Song" and Todd Snider's "Age Like Wine". Well, whenever he sings it with a certain type of person around you should hear the almost-deafening roar that ensues once he gets to "zee". "Zee is not Canadian!" the loud protests echo throughout our new house, as Kaishan looks around confused while making a valliant attempt to finish the song with the "Now I know my ABCs..." coda.

"Zee is not Canadian", the indignant and proud Canadians proclaim again and again.

The Speaking Of "Dismal Theories" Rant (The Pope Spews Some X'mas Hate)

Ok, look, it's the holiday season and, among other things, I've got many X'mas, as well as year-end poker, parties to attend and, therefore, I really don't have the time, nor the inclination, to rant right now; however, sadly, I'm left with no choice. Because, you see, holidays or no holidays, this simply cannot go uncommented on. Believe me, I was just trying to get into the holiday spirit yesterday when, out of nowhere, I got blindsided by none other than the Holy Pontiff; and he left me with no other option but to stand up to his bigotry, hatred and illogical ravings. Hey, somebody's got to do it, right?

The God Save The Queen Rant

You may have seen on the news 2 or 3 nights ago that the Queen was celebrating yet another 80th birthday and the British taxpayers were footing the bill for yet another elaborate celebration. That last one in April, it seems, was simply her "real birthday". This one, it turns out, was her "official birthday". Oh the joyous occasion.

Anyhow, as I was watching this on the news I kept waiting for someone to shout out, like that peasant to King Arthur in "Monty Python and The Holy Grail", "Who elected you anyway?" But, alas, no one ever asked the question.

The Wise Men of Kashmir Rant

Get this: One of the rebel groups, the Harkat-ul Jehad-e-Islami, fighting the Indian army in Kashmir made a number of threats over the past year that are sure to make life much more wonderful, happy and free for all the Kashmiri people.

Here are some of their threats/demands/orders to the local population:

- Any women who do not stop working for the government will be immediately killed.

- No girls should attend school.
