Welcome to MikesAndDislikes, the home of rants and raves and traveling days.

The home of music, film, politics, culture, religion, justice and even, sometimes, Untouchables who must be touched.

Also the home of the legendary 3-year "Bob, Basketball and Beer" backpacking trip across Asia, featuring many a tale of adventure, excitement, great food and wonderful people.

So take a look around and please enjoy.

But, be forewarned, this sure ain't your mother's rants and raves site. Don't expect to agree with everything that you see.

Hell, expect to be offended at times.

But here's hoping you find more to Mike than Dislike.

A Few Featured Rants and Raves:

In Praise Of Johanna: One Song That Conquers My Mind... And 4 Others That Make Up A Top 5

The country music station plays soft
But there’s nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind

      - Bob Dylan, "Visions of Johanna"

When it comes to naming all-time favorite Bob Dylan songs, I have dozens.

My Picks For The Top 15 Albums and 5 Songs of 2010

Considering that I've been thinking about nothing but music since I posted My Picks For The Best 15 Films of 2010 a week ago (partly due to the fact I've been writing this and partly because I went to see Ween in concert a few days ago, in a show some considered a "train wreck" and others, like myself, considered a bit bizarre but thoroughly entertaining), I guess it's finally time to get my Best Music picks of 2010 finished up.

My Picks For The Best 15 Films of 2010

A year ago I had a lot to say when it came to great films. Not only did I post My Picks For The Best Films of 2009 (a list of 15 films and 5 documentaries), but I also produced the monster of all posts: My Picks For The Top 100 Films of The Decade.

Well, this year things are a little simpler, as all I've got is a list of my favorite 15 films of the past year.

Mike's Likes #2: Broke Virgins and Lonely Jews

In this season of giving - with just days to go before X'mas - I think it's about time I shared two of my all-time favorite holiday songs with all of you.

The first one is, simply put, My Favorite X'mas Song of All-Time.

Mike's Likes #1: Suddenly It's Christmas

Over the years I've written about many of my favorite songs, mainly in year-end pieces such as My Picks For The Best 15 Albums and 40 Songs of 2007, The Best 20 Albums and 50 Songs of 2008: Dylan Tops Both Lists, The Top 15 Albums and 25 Songs of 2009 and, most extensively of all, The Top Albums, Songs and Artists of the Decade. Then, of course, there was The 25 Greatest Dylan Songs of The Past 20 Years.

However, starting from today, every now and then I'm simply going to throw out one of my favorite songs at you, all on its very own.

A Goddess Named Steve, A Real-Life Brian, and The Unutterable V-Word

In these times of Vatican sex abuse scandals and environmental degradation, sometimes it's important to stop and take a look at the lighter side of life.

Things like, say, Steve, the Indian Goddess.

Petty Gossip and Unfair Intimidation: A Look At The Real Victims of The Vatican Sex Abuse Scandal

"Indifference is the essence of inhumanity"

      - George Bernard Shaw

Hey, did you hear the news? The Vatican sex abuse scandal isn't really about the tens of thousands of little kids who've been raped and abused in all sorts of disturbing ways over the years by their friendly neighborhood clergymen. No, it seems the real issue, at least according to the Vatican and Pope Benedict himself, is the strength and resolve of the Church to not be intimidated by such "petty gossip".

Morally Bankrupt & No Longer Even Trying: Canada Opposes Ban On Endangered Bluefin Tuna

Remember when Canada used to take morally courageous stands on issues and was well-respected for it? Remember when it was America on the wrong side of so many issues, rather than Canada? And remember when the lust for profits didn't necessarily trump all else in every decision this country made?

Well, I've got something new for you to all remember and it's something, when the time comes, I sure hope no one forgets: When you read about the complete collapse of the Atlantic bluefin tuna population and its eventual extinction in a few short years from now, remember that it was Canada, as much as any other nation (aside from Japan), that was responsible.

Olympic Joy, Heroic Sid, Drunken Happy People, and Those Freaky Norwegians

It took a couple of days to digest it all, but, after a bit of thought, my take on the Vancouver Olympics is really quite simple: It was an absolute blast.

And the most impressive thing about these Winter Games had nothing to do with the sporting events themselves. Rather, it was the people - both locals and visitors - out on the streets partying and celebrating all day and all night over the entire duration of the Games.
