Daddy, The Monkey and The Halloween Carol
Kaishan had a real blast last night, as would be expected considering that it was his first real Halloween. He was only one and a half last year and, therefore, had no idea what it was all about, of course. But this year he was fully enthralled, enthused and excited by it all.
And, so, after climbing into his monkey suit (see photos below) we headed over to the local mall, where they had all sorts of fun activities going on. They also, luckily, had stuff like popcorn and peanuts for those little hyperactive monkeys who definitely didn't need any chocolate or sugar to get them going anymore than they already were.
From there we went to our friends Peter, Laura and Mike's house where we were the only trick or treaters all night long on their dark, lonely isolated street. It was almost like something out of a Dickens novel, perhaps his long lost masterpiece "A Halloween Carol".
After that act of charitable taking, we quickly returned home and headed out into our cul-de-sac with all the other kids to do a little trick or treating around our neighborhood before getting simultaneously freaked out and excited about the local neighborhood fireworks show. It went something like this: "Daddy, Daddy, I'm scared, I'm scared, I want to go home", quickly followed by "Daddy, Daddy, I want to see. I want to go back and see" once we'd made our retreat. This went on for the entire show.
There were many parents standing around the bon fire drinking many beers on this very social and kid-friendly street of ours. There were many excited and happy kids running around everywhere eating many many pounds of candy. And there were, as you'd imagine, many smiles all around. But there was only one monkey... and a very happy one at that.
It was a great night! But, I think it's important to stop and remember all those revelers out there who are less fortunate than us, which is why I ask you to please always keep Peter, Laura and Mike in your thoughts each time you're out festively celebrating yet another holiday. And if you're on that dark lonely street of theirs, please consider dropping by for a sympathy visit. I think it's the least we can do.
